La Chasse, Noir Plus Noir Que Le Noir (2017)

Where bought? La Face Cachee in Metz.

I am one of those suckers who is influenced by hearing something good in a record shop, and ownership of this record is testament. Then again, this record is a lot of fun, so who is the sucker?

La Chasse are a French duo from Marseille. I've no idea who they are (most contemporary French records I own, I will know someone in the band personally) and never got to see them live (I asked for them to play with us in Marseille but they were busy) but a few people I've spoken to them know them as music scene lifers and this is one of their many projects.

One plays bass, the other drums, and presumably both find little sound effects and share singing. Most of the songs are south of 100bpm, though not speaker-bendingly heavy even at their heaviest. They impress through a variety of approaches: some trouser-flapping noise outbursts, yes, but some gothy pop, some found sound, some punk. It all hangs together atmospherically and thematically.

They remind me a bit of Italian group oVo without the mad opera bits and not quite as crust, and quite a bit of Brooklyn duo Talk Normal - undemonstrative, feminine, weird enough, but always attached to some kind of recognisable form. Their best aspects are rooted in slow and heavy rock, but they don't stray off-course too badly when they explore their limited set-up.

They're in the game for the right reasons, too. Check this from their bandcamp attached to their newest album Sidera:

So why not give them a go for yourself?
