Where bought? Not sure. Really not sure. This feels like a record I have never not owned. It seems to have followed me around for over 20 years. Geographically that would put me in my home town, but I can't think of anywhere that might have stocked this. Also, I think I bought it because a pal had it and I liked it a lot, so I might even have got my ownership of it confused with his having it while we'd get stoned at his house.
Here is pretty much all of the Cramps that you need to own: no offence to their studio albums but they had so much personality and weirdness that studios just dampened their brio. If you're going to get a second release them, opt for the Live at Napa State Mental Hospital DVD - modern minds might say it was exploitation, but exploitation in its many forms are the very essence of this band
Lux Interior, erstwhile Cramps singer, has so much presence and humour tucked away behind his affected lip curl. He's fronting a great rock and roll band, but also tossing out zingers left and right. The rest of the band hack away at the songs like they're working a chain gang (which I mean as a sincere compliment, sometimes practice is the enemy of inspiration).
It's just six songs on this release at 45rpm per side and no duffer among them. 'Faster Pussycat' is probably the queen of the catwalk, but mostly I'm just amazed how they get away with tricks that I normally hate bands for, chiefly just recycling blues licks and basic chord progressions. It really is about charisma and you either got it or you don't.Not got much more to say so why not have a preview of that Napa State show?
